Princess Juliana Airport - Maho Beach, Sint Maarten
Jets roar in low over the sand of Maho Beach before touching down at Princess Juliana International Airport, on the Dutch side of the Caribbean island of Sint Maarten, and this camera watches them sweep in over the turquoise water.
The runway starts just behind the beach, so arriving planes pass only a short height above the people on the sand. That has made Maho Beach one of the most famous plane spotting places in the world.
The airport began as a US military airstrip in 1942, and the first commercial flight landed on December 3, 1943. It's named after Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, who visited the island in 1944, while she was still a princess.
Did You Know? In September 2017, Hurricane Irma tore the roof off the terminal and flooded the runway, but the airport reopened just over a month later using temporary buildings.
