Muizenberg Beach - Cape Town, South Africa
This camera looks north along Muizenberg Beach from an elevated position on the hillside above Surfers Corner, showing the full sweep of the beach stretching towards the Cape Flats with consistent lines of swell rolling in from False Bay. The suburban railway line that runs along the beachfront is visible in the foreground, and surfers can regularly be spotted in the water below.
Muizenberg is one of the most accessible surf beaches in South Africa and is widely regarded as the best beginner surf spot in the country, thanks to its long, gently breaking waves and sandy bottom. Surf schools operate on the beach year-round, and the water is noticeably warmer than the Atlantic-facing beaches on the other side of the Cape Peninsula due to False Bay's more sheltered position.
The beach is also part of the Shark Spotters programme, a South African initiative that stations trained spotters on the surrounding hillsides to watch for great white sharks and alert swimmers and surfers via a flag and siren system. False Bay has one of the highest concentrations of great white sharks in the world, and the programme has operated at Muizenberg since 2004.
Did You Know? Muizenberg was the site of the Battle of Muizenberg in 1795, when British forces defeated the Dutch Batavian Republic to take control of the Cape Colony. The battle lasted a single day and is considered one of the least contested military engagements in South African colonial history, but its outcome permanently altered the trajectory of the region.
