Brooks River Mouth - Katmai National Park, Alaska, USA

Where the Brooks River spills into the wide blue water of Naknek Lake, Katmai's brown bears gather to fish, play and snooze on the gravel bars, while floatplanes come and go on the lake and every so often a bear swims straight across the river channel.

It's a lot calmer down here than at the famous falls upstream, which is why mothers with cubs like it, well away from the big males. Young bears come here to practice their fishing too, splashing after salmon with mixed results.

July brings the sockeye run and a crowd of hungry bears, and late summer and fall are just as busy as they gorge on spawned-out fish before heading into their dens for the winter.

Did You Know? Every fall, Katmai holds Fat Bear Week, an online contest where fans vote for the bear that has bulked up the most before hibernation.
