Welcome to the mouth of the Brooks River in Katmai National Park, Alaska, USA, where the river runs out into Naknek Lake.

This is quieter water than the falls upstream, and that is exactly why it matters. Mothers bring cubs here to fish away from the big males, and young bears learn to catch salmon in the shallows.

Peak season is July and September, when the sockeye run. Bears feed almost constantly through autumn, putting on the weight they need to survive winter, and most disappear into dens by November.

Alaska is eight hours behind UTC in summer and nine in winter. The camera is named for Kat, who ran the explore.org camera operator team for years.

Did You Know? A Katmai brown bear can gain a third of its body weight in a single season on this river. By the time they den, the biggest males weigh over 450 kilograms, and they will lose most of it again by spring without eating, drinking or passing waste for around six months.
