Northern Lights - Kilpisjärvi, Lapland, Finland
This camera watches the night sky over Kilpisjärvi, a remote village in the far northwest of Finnish Lapland, where the northern lights often swirl in green bands above the snowy fells and the frozen lake.
Kilpisjärvi is one of the most active places in Finland for the aurora, with displays almost every week through the dark season, from late autumn to early spring, especially on crisp, frosty nights.
Above the village rises Saana, a fell 3,376 feet (1,029 m) high and one of Finland's most famous views. Nearby, the Three-Country Cairn marks the spot where Finland, Norway and Sweden meet, and you can step between three countries in seconds.
Did You Know? Lake Kilpisjärvi stays frozen so long that the ice usually doesn't melt until mid-June, and an ice fishing contest is held on it every May.
