Hiroshima Airport - Mihara, Hiroshima, Japan
Jets land and take off at Hiroshima Airport (広島空港), in the hills of Mihara about 31 miles (50 km) east of Hiroshima city, and this camera watches the runway and gates as flights connect the region with Tokyo and beyond.
The airport opened on October 29, 1993, replacing the old Hiroshima Airport closer to the city, which was renamed Hiroshima-Nishi. It sits 1,086 feet (331 m) above sea level, and its runway was extended to 9,843 feet (3,000 m) in 2001.
In 2015 about 2.67 million passengers used the airport. That same year, an Asiana Airlines jet from Seoul ran off the runway after hitting landing equipment, and the airport closed for two days.
Did You Know? When the new airport opened in 1993, its runway was 8,202 feet (2,500 m) long, and it took eight more years to stretch it to its current length.
