Oita Airport Apron - Kunisaki, Oita, Japan

Ground crews ready planes for their next flights on the apron at Oita Airport (大分空港), on the Kunisaki Peninsula in northeastern Kyushu, Japan, and this camera watches them come and go beside the sea.

The airport opened in 1971, built on land reclaimed from the sea. Its runway is 9,843 feet (3,000 m) long, and it lies about 18 miles (30 km) northeast of Oita city, with flights to Tokyo, Osaka and beyond.

A hovercraft once linked the airport with the city, but the service stopped in 2009. In July 2025 hovercraft came back, cutting the trip to about 35 minutes, compared with around an hour by road.

Did You Know? Oita is being studied as a landing site for Dream Chaser, an American spaceplane, which could make it Japan's first spaceport.
