Mount Aso - Kusasenri, Kumamoto, Japan
Rolling grassland stretches toward Mount Aso’s volcanic ridges, with a pale plume rising beyond the slopes when conditions allow. From the roof of the Aso Volcano Museum, the view takes in the Kusasenri area, where open ground and winding paths contrast with the darker mountain skyline.
Mount Aso, known in Japanese as 阿蘇山, is a volcanic complex within Aso-Kuju National Park on Kyushu. Its central peaks rise inside a much larger caldera, creating a landscape where grass-covered hills sit alongside exposed volcanic terrain. Nakadake contains the complex’s currently active crater.
Seasonal color changes sweep across the grassland, from green growth to tawny autumn slopes and occasional winter snow. Low cloud and fog can obscure the ridges, while clearer weather reveals their outlines and the movement of volcanic emissions. The broad perspective shows the surrounding landscape rather than looking directly down into the crater.
Did You Know? Kusasenri’s broad grassland occupies the remains of a volcanic crater formed around 30,000 years ago.
