Cog Railway Track - Mount Washington, New Hampshire, USA

This live webcam looks uphill along the Mount Washington Cog Railway from Waumbek Station in New Hampshire. Tracks lead through a corridor of evergreen trees toward the mountain’s upper slopes, with trains passing close to the camera. Beyond the railway, the forest gives way to the exposed ridges higher on Mount Washington.

The railway climbs the mountain’s western side, connecting its base station with the summit. Its distinctive central rack allows locomotive gears to grip the track on steep gradients. The view brings this unusual mountain railway into its wider setting of conifer woodland, rocky slopes, and open sky.

Conditions change considerably through the seasons. Snow can cover the surrounding trees and higher ground, while warmer months reveal the rough terrain beside the tracks. Passing clouds sometimes conceal the mountain, leaving the railway and nearby forest as the main features.

Did You Know? The Mount Washington Cog Railway opened on July 3, 1869, becoming the world’s first mountain-climbing cog railway.
