Sakurajima and Kotsuki River - Kagoshima, Japan
Sakurajima’s broad volcanic skyline rises across Kagoshima Bay, with the mouth of the Kotsuki River filling the foreground. A bridge spans the water beside waterfront buildings, placing the city’s everyday surroundings beneath the mountain’s rugged outline. Clear conditions reveal the summit ridges above the distant shoreline.
Known locally as 桜島, Sakurajima is an active volcano in southern Kyushu, directly across the bay from Kagoshima. Its slopes dominate the outlook from this riverside viewpoint in Tenpozan-cho, where the channel opens toward the wider water and the mountain forms a natural backdrop to the city.
Changing light alters the scene throughout the day, from a dark mountain silhouette against the morning sky to more detailed views of the slopes. Clouds can gather around the summit, while volcanic emissions may drift away from the craters. Below, wind and passing weather change the texture of the river and bay.
Did You Know? Sakurajima was an island until lava from its 1914 eruption filled a strait and joined it to the Osumi Peninsula.
