Kwa Maritane Waterhole - Pilanesberg, North West, South Africa

Camera byKwa Maritane↗

A sheltered waterhole lies beneath rocky hills at Kwa Maritane, with dense bushes surrounding its muddy banks. Animals emerge from the vegetation to drink, sometimes approaching close enough for their reflections to fill the foreground. Between visits, birds and ripples bring movement to the quiet pool.

The setting is Pilanesberg National Park in South Africa’s North West province, where bushveld spreads across an ancient volcanic landscape. Rocky slopes and wooded valleys create a varied backdrop, while waterholes bring animals into shared spaces within a park home to elephants, antelope and other African wildlife.

Changing rainfall alters the surrounding vegetation and the demand for water, with greener growth after summer rains and more exposed ground during drier periods. Visits are unpredictable, ranging from a lone animal at the bank to several arriving together. The low perspective keeps the water and its immediate surroundings at the center of the scene.

Did You Know? African elephants have two finger-like projections at the tip of their trunks, which they use to grasp small objects.
