Bonobo Sanctuary - Lola ya Bonobo, Kinshasa, DR Congo
On the forested edge of Kinshasa, a big, noisy family of bonobos spends its days foraging, playing and squabbling over snacks at Lola ya Bonobo, the world's only sanctuary for orphaned bonobos. The name means "paradise for bonobos" in Lingala, and it fits.
Around 60 of them live in a patch of rainforest here, many rescued as orphans from the bushmeat and illegal pet trades, and some have even gone back to the wild in a protected reserve deeper in the Congo.
Their mornings are spent foraging in the forest and their afternoons playing, grooming and sharing fruit, or snatching it. When a squabble breaks out, bonobos are much more likely to sort it out with a cuddle than a fight.
Did You Know? Bonobos live in the wild only in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Along with chimpanzees, they’re our closest living relatives.
