As the sun moves around the globe, so does the stream, so the view keeps shifting from ocean to ocean through the day. The cameras sit high on cliffs, buildings and poles, giving a clear view of each wave as it lines up and breaks.

In the 1980s, long before live cams, surfers in Southern California could call a phone line to hear a 90-second recorded report on the waves at their local breaks, and now a glance at a live camera does the same job.
