Camelthorn Waterhole - Boteti River, Botswana
This live camera overlooks a vital waterhole on the Boteti River in the Makgadikgadi region, one of the most dramatic wildlife corridors in southern Africa. The feed is operated by Camelthorn Camp in partnership with Explore.org and captures zebra migrations, hippos, elephant, and a remarkable variety of birdlife along the riverbank.
In 2024, Botswana suffered its driest wet season in 40 years. A local couple began pumping water from their private boreholes into the Boteti River to keep animals alive, joined by Animal Survival International. The operation now delivers nearly 60,000 litres of water daily using solar powered pumps, keeping this stretch of river alive through one of the harshest dry seasons on record.
The Makgadikgadi region is home to one of the largest zebra migrations in Africa, with tens of thousands of animals moving between the Okavango Delta and the Makgadikgadi Pans each year in search of water and grazing.
Did You Know? The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans are the remnants of an ancient super lake once larger than Switzerland. When it dried up thousands of years ago it left behind one of the largest salt flats on earth, still flooding enough during the rainy season to attract one of Africa's largest flamingo gatherings.
