Wombat Habitat - Satsukiyama Zoo, Osaka, Japan

This split-screen view shows four little windows into the wombat house at Satsukiyama Zoo (五月山動物園) in Ikeda, just north of Osaka city, and most of the time there's a sleepy wombat in each one.

The wombats came here from Launceston in Tasmania, Ikeda's sister city, and they've been the zoo's stars ever since. In 2024 one of them, Wain, was recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest wombat ever, at 34.

Wombats sleep through much of the day and usually wake around feeding time and in the cooler hours, when they shuffle out to dig, graze and wander between the dens and the grass yard. They may look slow, but over short distances they can run at about 25 mph (40 km/h).

Did You Know? Wombats are the only animals known to make cube-shaped poop. The flat sides stop it rolling away when they leave it on rocks and logs to mark their territory.
