Mt. Merapi Volcano - Central Java, Indonesia

Mount Merapi (Gunung Merapi) rises over the green farmland of Central Java, and this camera watches its steep, bare summit as clouds and gas plumes drift around one of the most active volcanoes on Earth.

Merapi has erupted regularly since 1548. In 2010 a series of large eruptions killed 353 people and forced 350,000 to flee their homes, and they also lowered the summit to about 9,613 feet (2,930 m).

The volcano stands just 17 miles (28 km) north of the city of Yogyakarta, home to 2.4 million people, and villages climb its slopes as high as 5,577 feet (1,700 m), which is why it's been named a Decade Volcano for close study.

Did You Know? Merapi's name is often translated as "Mountain of Fire," from the Sanskrit meru, mountain, and the Javanese api, fire.
