Waterhole and Vultures - Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, Zimbabwe

On the edge of Zambezi National Park, just outside the town of Victoria Falls, this waterhole below the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge draws a steady stream of thirsty wildlife from the Zimbabwean bush.

There's no fence between the lodge and the park, so every animal here has wandered in on its own, with elephants, buffalo, kudu and warthogs coming down to drink and baboons and impala drifting through in between. Around lunchtime each day the scene changes completely.

Scraps are put out, and the sky fills with white-backed, hooded and lappet-faced vultures, along with marabou storks and the odd hyena, a lifeline for some of Africa's most endangered birds. The famous falls nearby are known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, "the smoke that thunders".

Did You Know? Vultures have incredibly strong stomach acid that destroys deadly bacteria like anthrax and botulism, so by cleaning up carcasses they help stop diseases from spreading.
