Uummannaq Heliport - Greenland

Green pillars of aurora rise over the icy fjord at Uummannaq Heliport, where icebergs sit frozen in the bay and the snowy landing pad glows under the floodlights. Far north on Greenland’s west coast, this is one of the best places in the country to watch the northern lights.

Uummannaq is a small island town of around 1,400 people, about 370 miles (590 km) north of the Arctic Circle. Above the colorful houses towers Uummannaq mountain, about 3,840 feet (1,170 m) tall, whose rounded red granite shape gave the town its name, meaning “heart-shaped.”

From early November the sun stays below the horizon for nearly three months, and in winter the fjord freezes hard enough for dog sleds to cross the ice. In summer, giant icebergs from the surrounding glaciers crowd the water around the island.

Did You Know? In 1972, hunters near Uummannaq found eight Inuit mummies at Qilakitsoq, about 500 years old and so well preserved by the dry Arctic cold that their clothes and tattoos survived.
