Kangerlussuaq Airport West - Greenland

Runway lights glow at the head of a long fjord at Kangerlussuaq Airport, where the northern lights often swirl across the sky above the snowy hills. Sheltered far inland, the area enjoys some of the most settled and clear weather in Greenland, which makes it one of the best aurora spots in the country.

The airport began as a US air base during World War II, and for decades it was Greenland’s main international gateway, until big jets moved to Nuuk’s new runway in 2024. Today around 500 people live here, at the end of a fjord about 118 miles (190 km) long.

Musk oxen and caribou roam the tundra around the village, and the Arctic Circle Trail sets off from here on its long way to Sisimiut on the coast. In summer, gray meltwater from the ice sheet roars down the Watson River, right past the edge of the village.

Did You Know? A gravel road from Kangerlussuaq leads about 15 miles (25 km) to the edge of the Greenland ice sheet, one of the few places on Earth where you can drive right up to it.
