Nuuk Airport South - Greenland

Runway lights stretch across the snow at Nuuk Airport, with the lights of Greenland’s capital twinkling along the shore beyond. On clear nights in the dark half of the year, the northern lights often dance over the city and the mountains of the Nuuk Fjord.

Nuuk is home to around 19,000 people, about a third of Greenland’s population, and it sits at the mouth of one of the largest fjord systems on Earth. In November 2024 a new runway about 7,200 feet (2,200 m) long opened here, so large jets can now fly in directly from Europe and North America.

Across the water rises Sermitsiaq, a steep, snowcapped peak of about 3,970 feet (1,210 m) that has become a symbol of the city. Humpback whales feed in the fjord in summer, and colorful wooden houses climb the rocky hills of the old harbor.

Did You Know? In Greenlandic, Nuuk simply means “the cape,” after the rocky point of land where the town was founded in 1728.
