Sisimiut Airport Southeast - Greenland

Snowy hills and a still, glassy inlet catch the sunrise beside Sisimiut Airport on Greenland’s west coast, with the pointed peak of Nasaasaaq rising behind the town. On clear winter nights the same wide sky turns green and violet when the northern lights appear.

Sisimiut, once known by its Danish name Holsteinsborg, is Greenland’s second-largest town, home to about 5,500 people, and lies about 25 miles (40 km) north of the Arctic Circle. Nasaasaaq stands about 2,570 feet (784 m) tall and is a favorite climb for locals in summer.

The town marks the end of the Arctic Circle Trail, a hike of about 100 miles (160 km) across the tundra from Kangerlussuaq. Inland, the Aasivissuit-Nipisat hunting grounds, used by Inuit for over 4,000 years, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in summer humpback whales are often seen feeding just offshore.

Did You Know? Sisimiut is the southernmost town in Greenland where sled dogs are allowed. Farther south they are banned, to keep the Greenland sled dog breed pure.
