Hwange Safari Lodge Waterhole - Zimbabwe
This live waterhole camera sits at Hwange Safari Lodge on the boundary of Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe's largest game reserve covering over 14,600 square kilometres of wilderness in the northwest of the country.
Hwange is home to the largest population of African elephants in the world, estimated at over 45,000 animals, including the famous presidential herd that has roamed the park for generations. The waterhole also draws buffalo, lion, leopard, wild dog, hyena, and giraffe, with sightings varying dramatically between the wet and dry seasons.
What makes Hwange particularly significant for wildlife is that most of its waterholes are artificially pumped, a programme started in the 1930s that now maintains over 60 waterholes across the park, without which much of the wildlife simply could not survive the long dry season.
Did You Know? Cecil the lion, whose killing by an American trophy hunter in 2015 sparked global outrage and reignited the international debate around trophy hunting, lived in Hwange National Park. His death prompted Zimbabwe to temporarily suspend lion hunting permits and led to lasting changes in trophy hunting regulations in several countries.
