Nuuk Fjord West - Nuuk, Greenland, Denmark

Camera byMalik Hansen↗

Rocky islands and open water spread beneath a wide Greenlandic sky, with the camera looking west toward Akia from Nuussuaq in Nuuk. Snow can dust the shoreline while drifting ice breaks up the dark water, and low sunlight casts a warm reflection across the fjord.

Greenland’s capital stands at the mouth of Nuup Kangerlua, a branching fjord system connecting the coast with a mountainous interior. From this seaward perspective, low rocky landforms stretch across the horizon, giving the scene a more open character than the steep-sided passages farther inland.

Long summer days bring extended twilight, while darker autumn and winter nights allow stars and occasional northern lights to appear above the water. The camera’s night settings are optimized for auroras, though cloud cover and solar activity determine what is visible. Daylight returns the focus to ice, weather and the coast.

Did You Know? Oxygen high in Earth’s atmosphere can produce both green and red auroras, depending on how its atoms are energized.
