Two-Toed Sloths - Riga Zoo, Riga, Latvia
Sloths hang among a network of branches and ropes inside a bright indoor habitat at Riga Zoo. Feeding dishes and suspended platforms sit between the climbing routes, while small black monkeys move through the same space, bringing a quicker rhythm to the sloths’ slow movements.
Located in Riga (Rīga), the zoo’s Zinarium environmental education center houses Linnaeus’s two-toed sloths alongside Goeldi’s monkeys and southern three-banded armadillos. The shared exhibit brings together South American mammals with very different ways of moving, from climbing above the ground to exploring the habitat floor.
Much of the sloths’ time passes in stillness, with curved claws holding them securely as they rest or reach for food. Keepers sometimes enter to replenish dishes and tend the enclosure, while the monkeys investigate nearby branches. Animals can disappear behind trunks or rest beyond the camera’s view.
Did You Know? Two-toed sloths have two clawed toes on each front foot but three on each back foot.
