Polar Bears - Alaska Zoo, Anchorage, Alaska, USA

Polar bears walk across rocky ledges beside a pool at Alaska Zoo, with scattered toys adding splashes of color to the gray enclosure. The camera follows their outdoor habitat, where time in the water alternates with exploring, investigating objects and resting beyond the pool’s edge.

In Anchorage, the zoo provides a managed setting for animals associated with Alaska and other northern regions. Its polar bear habitat brings land and water together, allowing these powerful swimmers to move between the pool and raised surfaces while keepers provide food, care and enrichment.

Seasonal changes bring snow and ice to the enclosure before warmer weather exposes the rockwork again. A bear may pass close to the lens or disappear into another part of the habitat, leaving quieter stretches focused on the pool. These pauses reflect the animals’ daily movements rather than a seasonal migration.

Did You Know? Polar bears are so well insulated that they can overheat during strenuous activity, even in cold surroundings.
