Polar Bears - Tundra Buggy Lodge North, Churchill, Canada
Low willow scrub and open tundra stretch toward Hudson Bay beyond the elevated Tundra Buggy Lodge near Churchill. Polar bears can wander through this north-facing view, sometimes approaching the lodge while others rest on the surrounding ground, where autumn frost gradually gives way to snow.
Along this part of Manitoba’s coast, bears gather each fall while waiting for sea ice to form. The frozen bay provides the platform they need to hunt seals, so their time ashore follows the seasonal cycle of melting summer ice and returning winter cold.
October and November bring the main bear activity, with quiet periods between visits and much less action outside the autumn season. Large tundra vehicles sometimes enter the scene, showing how people travel across this remote landscape. Arctic foxes and ptarmigan may also appear among the low vegetation.
Did You Know? Polar bear footpads are covered with tiny bumps called papillae, which help their paws grip slippery ice.
