Dairy Cow Barn - Angermünde, Brandenburg, Germany
Black-and-white dairy cows rest on straw while others stand beside the feeding area in a barn near Angermünde. Metal railings divide the spacious interior into sections, and the elevated view follows the herd’s unhurried routine as animals settle down, chew or move between resting places.
The farm lies in Schmargendorf, part of Angermünde in the Uckermark region of Brandenburg. Surrounding fields supply feed for the cows, connecting the barn with the agricultural landscape outside. Nearby woodland and farmland form part of the wider Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve in northeastern Germany.
Known locally as Milchkühe, dairy cows spend substantial portions of their day eating, resting and chewing cud. These quiet pauses are part of digestion, as previously swallowed food returns to the mouth for further chewing. In spring and summer, the farm’s cows also spend time on pasture.
Did You Know? Cows have one stomach with four compartments, rather than four separate stomachs, helping them digest tough plant material.
