Narsaq Heliport - Greenland

A full moon hangs over the fjord as ribbons of northern lights sweep across the sky at Narsaq Heliport in South Greenland, with the lights of the small town glowing along the hillside to the left. Behind the fence lies open, rolling land, rare in a country of steep mountains and ice.

That gentle land gave the town its name, as Narsaq means “the plain” in Greenlandic. Around 1,300 people live here, at the mouth of a fjord where icebergs drift past and sheep graze the green slopes in summer, part of Greenland’s small farming region.

The hills just outside town belong to the Ilímaussaq complex, one of the richest places on Earth for rare minerals. Across the water lies the Norse farming country around Narsarsuaq and Qassiarsuk, where Erik the Red settled more than 1,000 years ago.

Did You Know? Tugtupite, a rare pink gemstone found in the hills near Narsaq, glows bright red under ultraviolet light and deepens in color when left in the sun.
