Avenida 9 de Julio - Buenos Aires, Argentina
This camera is mounted on the UADE university campus at the intersection of Avenida 9 de Julio and Avenida Independencia in central Buenos Aires, looking north along one of the widest urban avenues in the world. The tree-lined median strips and constant flow of traffic give a clear sense of the scale of the boulevard, with the Buenos Aires skyline stretching away in the background.
Avenida 9 de Julio runs for around two kilometres through the centre of the city and is named after Argentina's independence day of 9 July 1816. At its widest point it spans up to 140 metres across, including service roads and median strips, and carries some of the heaviest traffic of any street in South America.
The surrounding San Telmo and Montserrat neighbourhoods visible from this position are among the oldest parts of Buenos Aires, with a mix of nineteenth century architecture and mid-century apartment blocks lining the streets behind the avenue.
Did You Know? The Obelisco de Buenos Aires, the city's most recognisable landmark, stands just a few blocks north of this camera at the intersection of 9 de Julio and Corrientes. It was built in 1936 to mark the 400th anniversary of the first founding of Buenos Aires and took just 31 days to construct.
