Nanortalik Heliport - Greenland
Bands of green aurora drift over the rooftops of Nanortalik, the southernmost town in Greenland, as the harbor lights reflect in the still water below. The heliport sits right on the edge of town, with rocky hills and the open sea all around.
Around 1,200 people live in Nanortalik, which sits on a small island near Cape Farewell, the southern tip of Greenland. Helicopters are the main link to the rest of the country, and in summer, icebergs and broken sea ice drift past the harbor on the cold East Greenland Current.
Nearby, the Tasermiut Fjord cuts deep into the mountains, lined with sheer granite walls that draw big-wall climbers from around the world. Back in town, an open-air museum keeps old wooden houses, turf huts and hunting kayaks, and whales sometimes pass close to shore in summer.
Did You Know? Nanortalik means “the place of polar bears” in Greenlandic, because bears used to drift down the coast on the sea ice in spring and come ashore here.
