Upernavik Airport South - Greenland
In the blue light of a winter morning, Upernavik Airport looks down over icebergs scattered across the sea and the colorful houses of the town glowing below. High on the island’s rocky ridge, the view stretches out over a maze of islands and frozen fjords far up Greenland’s northwest coast.
Upernavik sits about 500 miles (800 km) north of the Arctic Circle, and its name is often translated as “the springtime place.” Around 1,000 people live here, and for about three months each winter the sun never rises, leaving long nights for the northern lights.
The waters around Upernavik are full of icebergs calved from some of the busiest glaciers in Greenland, and seals, narwhals and polar bears live in the surrounding sea ice. Hunters still use dog sleds on the frozen fjords in winter.
Did You Know? Upernavik’s runway was built along the top of a rocky ridge above the town, because the small island has almost no flat ground.
