Solent View - Ryde, Isle of Wight, UK
This live 4K camera streams from All Saints Church in Ryde, looking north across the Solent towards Portsmouth and Southsea on the Hampshire coast. The feed captures one of the most active stretches of water in the UK, with ferries, yachts, cruise ships, and cargo vessels passing constantly between Southampton, Portsmouth, and the open sea beyond.
The Victorian sea fort visible in the frame is No Man's Land Fort, one of four Palmerston Forts built in the Solent between 1861 and 1880 to defend Portsmouth Harbour against a feared French naval invasion that never came. The forts were so expensive and ultimately unnecessary that they were nicknamed Palmerston's Follies after the Prime Minister who commissioned them. No Man's Land Fort has since been converted into a luxury hotel.
Did You Know? The Solent has some of the most unusual tidal patterns in the world, experiencing a double high tide caused by the way the English Channel funnels water around both sides of the Isle of Wight. This means high water can last for several hours rather than the typical single peak seen on most coastlines.
