Lake Hood Seaplane Base - Anchorage, Alaska, USA

Floatplanes and bush planes line the shores of Lake Hood in Anchorage, Alaska, and this camera watches them come and go across the water in summer and the snow and ice in winter, with the Chugach Mountains on the skyline.

Lake Hood and the joined Lake Spenard make up one of the busiest seaplane bases in the world, averaging about 190 flights a day. More than 1,000 aircraft are based here, almost all of them small single-engine planes.

In winter the frozen lake is kept smooth for planes on skis, and there's also a 2,200-foot (671 m) gravel runway for planes on wheels. For many Alaskans, these planes are the only way to reach remote lodges and villages.
