Kulusuk Airport West - Greenland
Snow-covered hills ring the gravel runway at Kulusuk Airport on Greenland’s wild east coast, where storms can roll in off the ice and whiteout the whole valley in minutes. On clear winter nights, the dark sky over the mountains comes alive with the northern lights.
Kulusuk is a small island village of around 250 people, and its airport is the main gateway to East Greenland, with flights from Iceland landing here after about two hours. In summer, icebergs drift past the rocky shore, and traditional drum dancing is still part of village life.
From here, helicopters and boats carry travelers on to Tasiilaq, the largest town on the east coast, about 12 miles (20 km) away across the fjord. Polar bears sometimes drift down the coast on the sea ice, and you can see Tasiilaq and its mountains on our Tasiilaq Heliport cam.
Did You Know? Kulusuk’s runway was built by the US military in the 1950s to supply a Cold War radar station on the island, part of a chain watching for incoming bombers.
