Tasiilaq Heliport - Greenland

Helicopters land and lift off from a single small pad at Tasiilaq Heliport, on Ammassalik Island in southeastern Greenland, and this camera watches them against a backdrop of snowy mountains, sea ice and the rugged Arctic coast.

Tasiilaq is the largest town on Greenland's east coast, with about 1,830 people, but there are almost no roads beyond it. The longest is a 1.9-mile (3 km) gravel track, so people travel by helicopter or boat.

Air Greenland helicopters fly about 15 miles (24 km) to Kulusuk Airport, which connects to Nuuk and Iceland, and run supply flights to tiny settlements along the coast. The town began as a Danish trading station in 1894.

Did You Know? The town was called Ammassalik until 1997, when it was renamed Tasiilaq, meaning "the place at the lakes."
