Old Faithful - Yellowstone National Park, USA
Every 60 to 110 minutes, without fail, Old Faithful erupts. The camera looks out across the Upper Geyser Basin in Wyoming from an elevated position, capturing the crowds gathered at the viewing platform and the geyser itself surrounded by the otherworldly geothermal landscape of Yellowstone National Park.
Yellowstone sits atop one of the largest active volcanic systems on Earth, with a magma chamber stretching roughly 55 miles long and 20 miles wide beneath the surface. The park contains more than 10,000 geothermal features including geysers, hot springs, fumaroles and mud pots, and holds more than half of the world's active geysers within its boundaries.
Old Faithful erupts roughly 20 times a day, sending a column of boiling water up to 184 feet into the air and discharging up to 8,400 gallons per eruption. It has been doing so continuously since its discovery in 1870.
Did You Know? The water erupted by Old Faithful fell as rain or snow up to 500 years ago. It takes that long for water to percolate deep enough through the rock, be superheated by the magma system beneath, and finally force its way back to the surface.
