The Needles - Isle of Wight, UK
This live camera looks out over The Needles, three distinctive chalk stacks rising 30 metres from the Solent at the western tip of the Isle of Wight. The red and white striped lighthouse perched on the outermost rock has guided ships through these treacherous waters since 1859, and was manned continuously until its automation in 1994.
The Needles sit within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, managed by the National Trust. The dramatic chalk cliffs of Alum Bay directly behind them are famous for their multi coloured sand layers, formed by different minerals staining the chalk over millions of years, and have been a tourist attraction since the Victorian era.
Did You Know? The Needles originally numbered four rocks, not three. The fourth, a tall needle shaped stack called Lot's Wife, collapsed into the sea in 1764 during a storm, which is ironic given the name of the formation it left behind. The area regularly records the highest wind speeds anywhere in southern England.
