San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge - California, USA
This live camera looks along the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge, one of the busiest bridges in the United States, carrying over 260,000 vehicles daily across San Francisco Bay between the city and Oakland. The western span visible in this feed is a suspension bridge opened in 1936, just six months before the more famous Golden Gate Bridge opened a few miles to the north.
At 7.2 kilometres long the Bay Bridge is significantly longer than the Golden Gate and handles far more traffic, yet it rarely gets the same attention. The bridge actually consists of two separate structures joined at Yerba Buena Island in the middle of the bay, with the eastern span replaced entirely by a new self anchored suspension bridge that opened in 2013 after years of construction.
Did You Know? During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, a 15 metre section of the Bay Bridge's upper deck collapsed onto the lower deck, killing one person and closing the bridge for a month. The Golden Gate Bridge, despite being more famous, suffered no structural damage in the same earthquake.
