San Francisco Skyline and Bay Bridge - Treasure Island, USA
This live camera sits on Treasure Island in the middle of San Francisco Bay, offering one of the most dramatic panoramic views of the city available anywhere. The full San Francisco skyline stretches across the right of the frame, the Bay Bridge spans the water in the centre, and Yerba Buena Island sits to the left, all framed by the open waters of one of the most iconic bays in the world.
Treasure Island is an entirely artificial island, built in 1936 from sand dredged from the bay floor for the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition. After the exposition it was handed to the US Navy, who used it as a base until 1997. It has since been undergoing redevelopment into a mixed residential and commercial neighbourhood, with the views from its northern shore remaining one of the best kept secrets in the Bay Area.
Did You Know? Treasure Island was built specifically to be the site for San Francisco's own world's fair, the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939. The plan was to convert it into a commercial airport after the fair closed, but the Navy took it over instead when World War Two began, a plan that was never revisited.
