Skomer Island Puffin Colony - Wales (Cam 1)

This camera watches over the grassy clifftops of Skomer Island (Ynys Sgomer), a wildlife reserve off the coast of Wales, dotted with puffins and with the open sea beyond. The island can only be reached by boat, and only in the warmer months, so the birds have it mostly to themselves.

Tens of thousands of puffins come here each spring to raise their chicks in burrows, while razorbills, guillemots and gulls nest on the cliffs nearby and seals rest on the rocks below.

The puffins stay from April to late July, then head back out to sea for the winter and the slopes go quiet. Don't miss Cam 2 for a close-up view of the puffins.

Did You Know? Skomer is home to the largest colony of Manx shearwaters in the world. They only come ashore at night.
