Teign Estuary - Teignmouth, UK

Boats lie at their moorings on the wide Teign Estuary at Teignmouth, in Devon on England's south coast, and this camera looks out over the river as the tide fills and empties the estuary toward the village of Shaldon.

Teignmouth stands on the north bank where the River Teign meets the sea, about 12 miles (19 km) south of Exeter. Across the water rises The Ness, a red sandstone headland, linked by a road bridge and a small ferry.

The town's port dates back to the 13th century and still ships clay, timber and grain. Along the coast, Brunel's railway runs on a stone sea wall between Teignmouth and Dawlish Warren, right beside the waves.

Did You Know? In 1690 French galleys raided Teignmouth and burned many of its homes and ships, often called the last invasion of England. French Street is named after the attack.
