Baby Turtle Cam - ECHO Leahy Center, Vermont, USA

Welcome to the baby turtle exhibit at ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vermont, USA.

The tank holds a mesh basking platform covered in smooth pebbles, with shallow water around it. The turtles are tiny, so watch the stones carefully before deciding the tank is empty.

These are eastern spiny softshell and northern map turtles, both of conservation concern in Vermont. They are here because they were dug out of their nests by predators, or hatched too late in the autumn to survive on a cold beach.

ECHO runs the programme with Vermont Fish and Wildlife. The turtles spend the winter here being fed and kept warm, then go back into Lake Champlain every June.

Vermont is four hours behind UTC in summer and five in winter.

Did You Know? Spiny softshells do not have a hard shell at all. Their carapace is covered in leathery skin rather than plates, which lets them absorb oxygen through it and stay underwater far longer than other turtles. It also means they bury themselves in sand and breathe through a snorkel-like snout while completely hidden.
