Sheep Barn - Farm Sanctuary, Watkins Glen, New York, USA

Woolly faces, curious rams and the occasional snoozing lamb fill this cozy barn at Farm Sanctuary, tucked into the rolling hills of New York's Finger Lakes near Watkins Glen.

Every sheep here was rescued, many from neglect or from farms where they would have been sent to slaughter, and now they spend their days grazing the pastures outside and wandering back into the barn to nap, eat hay and catch up with their friends.

The flock is a real mix, from fluffy white ewes to horned, patchwork-coated rams, and since sheep that are allowed to grow old can live for 10 to 12 years or more, many of them will be here far longer than they ever would have been on a commercial farm.

Did You Know? Sheep are much smarter than they’re given credit for. Studies have shown they can recognize and remember the faces of at least 50 other sheep for up to two years.
