Runway 24L/24R - Los Angeles Airport, CA, USA

On the north side of Los Angeles International Airport, big jets from every corner of the Pacific line up on runways 24L and 24R, right in front of this camera.

It's a nonstop mix of traffic, from short hops to San Francisco to long-haul giants arriving from Tokyo, Sydney and Dubai, with wide-bodies like the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 sharing the tarmac with regional jets and cargo freighters.

On a busy day a new arrival touches down every minute or two, which is exactly why plane spotters love LAX. In the late afternoon the sun lights up each tail fin, and after dark the runway edge lights turn every takeoff into a streak of color.

Did You Know? LAX was originally just “LA”. When airports switched to three-letter codes in the 1940s, an X was added to the end, and the name stuck.
