Statue of Liberty - New York Harbor, USA

The Statue of Liberty stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, holding her torch high over the water, and this camera watches her through the day, from bright mornings to sunsets that turn the whole statue into a dark silhouette.


The statue was a gift from France, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi with an iron framework by Gustave Eiffel, and it was dedicated on October 28, 1886. It stands 305 feet (93 m) from the ground to the tip of the torch.


Lady Liberty was originally a shiny reddish-brown, the color of new copper. A green patina began spreading soon after 1900, and by 1906 it covered the whole statue, giving it the color we know today.


Did You Know? Visitors haven't been allowed up into the torch since 1916, when the climb was closed for safety after the Black Tom explosion in the harbor.
