Lake Ohrid Waterfront - Ohrid, North Macedonia

From the waterfront in the town of Ohrid, this camera looks out over Lake Ohrid (Охридско Езеро), whose clear water stretches away toward the mountains on the far shore, on the border between North Macedonia and Albania.

It's one of the oldest lakes in the world, possibly 3 to 5 million years old, and one of the deepest in Europe, reaching 945 feet (288 m). More than 200 kinds of animals and plants live here and nowhere else.

About two thirds of the lake lies in North Macedonia and a third in Albania. The Macedonian side became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, and the listing was extended to the Albanian shore in 2019.

Did You Know? Lake Ohrid is home to its own trout, the Ohrid trout, which was fished so heavily that fishing for it was banned for seven years from 2004.
