Terazije - Belgrade, Serbia
This camera looks down over Terazije, the central square and main intersection of Belgrade, where several of the city's busiest streets converge in a roundabout arrangement with a fountain monument visible on the right side of the frame. The Hotel Moskva, one of Belgrade's most recognisable historic buildings with its distinctive green facade, stands at the top right corner of the shot.
Terazije has been the commercial and social centre of Belgrade since the nineteenth century and remains the reference point from which distances in Serbia are traditionally measured, in the same way that other European capitals use a central monument or square as their kilometre zero. The name comes from the Turkish word for scales or balance, a reference to the weighing of goods that once took place here.
The intersection is one of the busiest in Serbia, with trams, buses, cars, and pedestrians all sharing the space throughout the day. The surrounding streets form Belgrade's main shopping and hotel district, and the square is a regular gathering point for public events, celebrations, and protests.
Did You Know? Belgrade is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, with settlements on the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers dating back over 7,000 years. The city has been razed and rebuilt more than 40 times throughout its history, more than almost any other European capital, due to its strategic position at the crossroads of central and southeastern Europe.
