Mt. Vesuvius - Naples, Italy
This live webcam shows Mount Vesuvius from the town of Portici near Naples in southern Italy. The camera is installed at the CNR ISAFoM research facility and captures a panoramic view of the volcano's western slopes rising above the densely populated Bay of Naples region.
Mount Vesuvius is one of the most famous volcanoes in the world and the only active volcano on mainland Europe. Standing about 1,281 meters high, it is best known for its catastrophic eruption in AD 79 that buried the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum under ash and volcanic debris.
Although Vesuvius has been quiet since its last eruption in 1944, it remains one of the most closely monitored volcanoes on Earth due to the millions of people living nearby. The volcano's distinctive cone dominates the landscape of Naples and is a defining landmark of southern Italy.
Plaster casts of the victims: When Pompeii was excavated, archaeologists discovered that bodies had decomposed inside hardened ash layers, leaving hollow cavities. By pouring plaster into these spaces, they created the famous casts that preserve the exact final positions of people and animals during the AD 79 eruption.
