Gatlinburg SkyPark - TN, USA
This live camera sits at the Gatlinburg SkyPark attraction on the mountain ridge above downtown Gatlinburg, looking north-west down the length of the Parkway and across the Great Smoky Mountains. The SkyPark sits at an elevation of approximately 518 metres above sea level, around 200 metres above the town centre visible below, and is reached via the Gatlinburg SkyLift, a chairlift that has operated since 1954 making it one of the oldest continuously operating chairlifts in the United States. The SkyBridge, which departs from this platform, is a 244-metre pedestrian suspension bridge and the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America.
The mountain ridgeline filling the background is the northern boundary of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in the United States with over 12 million visitors recorded in 2023, nearly double the attendance of the second most visited park. The park straddles the Tennessee-North Carolina border across 2,114 square kilometres and takes its name from the natural fog produced by vegetation, which releases water vapour and organic compounds that scatter blue light and give the mountains their characteristic smoky appearance. Gatlinburg itself sits at the only signalised intersection on the US Highway 441 corridor through the park, making the Parkway visible in this feed one of the most trafficked gateway roads in the US national park system.
The tower visible on the ridge to the left of centre in the background is the Gatlinburg Space Needle, a 99-metre observation tower that has operated since 1970. Gatlinburg sits in Sevier County, Tennessee, which draws over 14 million tourists per year, generating more than $3 billion in tourism revenue annually for a county with a permanent population of just 98,000. The red structure visible in the town below is part of the Gatlinburg SkyLift Park's lower terminal on the Parkway.
Did You Know? The SkyBridge at Gatlinburg SkyLift Park is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America at 244 metres, swaying up to 60 centimetres in high winds above a 73-metre drop.
