This live camera looks south along Main Street in Jonesborough, Tennessee's oldest town, chartered in 1779 before Tennessee itself became a state in 1796. The courthouse clock tower visible on the left is the Washington County Courthouse, and the brick church beside it is the First Presbyterian Church, one of several antebellum-era structures that line a Main Street listed on the National Register of Historic Places in its entirety.
Jonesborough sits in Washington County in the Appalachian Highlands of north-east Tennessee, 20 miles from the Virginia border and 100 miles north-east of Knoxville. The town is best known as the home of the National Storytelling Festival, held every October since 1973 and drawing over 10,000 visitors annually to what is considered the premier storytelling event in the United States.
The brick commercial buildings running along the right side of frame date primarily from the mid-19th century and house independent shops and restaurants serving a historic district that attracts over 200,000 visitors per year. Jonesborough was also briefly part of the short-lived State of Franklin, an unrecognised US state that existed from 1784 to 1788 before being reabsorbed into North Carolina.
