Sakurajima Volcano - Kagoshima City View, Japan

Sakurajima (桜島) rises across the bay behind the rooftops of Kagoshima City, on Japan's southern island of Kyushu, and this camera watches the volcano over the city skyline as plumes of ash and steam drift from its summit.

It's one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with thousands of small explosions a year. Between 1955 and 2024, more than 15,000 eruptions were recorded from its Minamidake and Showa craters alone.

Living beside it means living with ash. A big eruption in August 2013 sent a plume about 16,400 feet (5,000 m) high and dropped heavy ash across central Kagoshima, just across the bay from the volcano's summit.

Did You Know? Sakurajima means "Cherry Blossom Island," and its rich volcanic soil grows giant Sakurajima radishes as big as basketballs.
